Design & Build
The router abandons the spider-leg antenna look for a clean, rectangular tower with internal antennas. The matte black plastic case has a small footprint and blends into most entertainment centers. Four 2.5G RJ-45 ports are a welcome sight, as most sub-$200 routers still ship with gigabit-only ports. Ventilation is handled by bottom and side grilles, and the router runs cool even under load. The included wall-mount kit is a nice touch.
Performance
In our 2,100 sq ft test home, the BE550 delivered strong coverage on the 5GHz and 6GHz bands, with sustained throughput of 1.8 Gbps at 15 feet line-of-sight using a Wi-Fi 7 client. At 50 feet through two drywall walls, throughput dropped to 780 Mbps on 5GHz and 420 Mbps on 2.4GHz, which is competitive for a router in this class. Multi-device performance is solid - we tested with 30 simultaneous devices including two 4K streams, and the router handled it without dropping connections or introducing noticeable latency spikes.
Features
The TP-Link Tether app provides straightforward setup and management, including network visualization, QoS prioritization, and guest network controls. Wi-Fi 7’s multi-link operation (MLO) is supported, allowing compatible clients to bond across bands for improved speed and reliability. Parental controls are basic but functional, allowing per-device time limits and content blocks. The USB 3.0 port can share a printer or external drive over the network.
