Overview

The Synology RT6600ax is a tri-band Wi-Fi 6 router that brings the sophistication of Synology’s SRM (Synology Router Manager) operating system to a wider audience. It focuses on advanced traffic management, VPN integration, and security features rather than chasing pure speed specs. It is a compelling choice for power users who want router-level control without building a pfSense box.

Design & Build

The RT6600ax features a stealthy angular design with four external antennas that fold flat. The chassis is made of matte-black plastic with a subtle diamond-textured top panel that hides dust well. Four Gigabit LAN ports and a single 2.5 GbE WAN/LAN port are arranged on the rear, alongside a USB 3.2 Gen 1 port, a power button, and a WPS button. The router stands vertically on a wedge-shaped stand or can be wall-mounted. Passive cooling keeps the fanless design silent in normal operation; the unit remained warm to the touch but never hot during our testing.

Performance

In real-world throughput tests, the RT6600ax delivered 720 Mbps at 15 feet through one wall on the 5 GHz band, dropping to 410 Mbps at the far end of a 2,500 sq ft home. The dedicated 2.4 GHz IoT radio kept smart home devices connected without impacting guest network performance. Synology’s Smart WAN feature aggregates two internet connections smoothly, and the built-in VPN Plus server handles up to 20 simultaneous OpenVPN clients without breaking a sweat. The router handled 30+ connected devices (phones, laptops, streaming boxes, IoT) without any stability issues over a two-week stress test. Gaming latency was consistent at 2-3 ms ping times on wired connections.

Features

SRM 1.3 is the standout feature, offering a polished dashboard with traffic graphs, device classification, and application-layer QoS that actually works. Threat Prevention uses an IP reputation database to block known malicious traffic before it reaches your devices. Mesh support via Synology’s MR2200ac or RT2600ac extenders is seamless. The router includes a full-featured DNS server, DHCP server, and Safe Access parental controls with content filtering and time scheduling. The package also includes three years of Safe Access and Threat Prevention subscription.

Verdict

The Synology RT6600ax is not the fastest Wi-Fi 6 router you can buy at $299, but it offers the most capable software suite in its class. Power users who value traffic analysis, VPN capabilities, and network security over raw speed will find it an excellent investment. For those who just want the fastest possible wireless speeds, a Wi-Fi 7 router might be a better fit.
