Scoring Breakdown

Overview

The MSI MEG Z890 ACE is MSI’s flagship LGA 1851 motherboard, purpose-built for Intel’s Core Ultra 200-series (Arrow Lake) processors. It features a massive 24+2+2 power stage VRM with 105A Smart Power Stages, dual PCIe 5.0 x16 slots, dual PCIe 5.0 M.2 slots, Wi-Fi 7, and a 5GbE Intel LAN controller. At $479, it’s a direct competitor to ASUS ROG offerings and sets the standard for Intel motherboard design in 2026.

Design & Build

The MEG Z890 ACE adopts a clean, premium aesthetic with a dark PCB, extensive brushed aluminum heatsinks, and a subtle gold-accented MEG branding on the chipset cover. The VRM area is covered by large heatsinks connected via a heat pipe, and both M.2 slots include their own heatsinks with a tool-less magnetic latch design that MSI calls “M.2 Shield Frozr.”

Build quality is exceptional, with an 8-layer server-grade PCB designed for signal integrity at high memory speeds. The backplate is a full metal design with thermal pads for backside components. The PCIe slots are reinforced with steel sheathing and feature MSI’s PCIe Steel Armor for heavy GPU support. The entire board has a dense, premium feel that inspires confidence.

Performance

The VRM is an absolute monster. The 24+2+2 power stage design (24 Vcore phases) using 105A Renesas RAA22010540 SPS FETs provides clean, stable power that easily handles the Core Ultra 9 285K at 250W sustained loads with significant overclocking headroom. Even under extreme overclocking, the VRM heatsinks remain at reasonable temperatures thanks to the generous finned surface area.

Memory overclocking is a standout feature. The Z890 ACE supports DDR5 speeds up to 9200+ MT/s with MSI’s Memory Boost trace optimization and BIOS tuning. We achieved DDR5-8400 CL36 stable with a Core Ultra 9 285K, and MSI’s BIOS provides comprehensive memory tuning options including memory extension mode presets.

The dual PCIe 5.0 x16 slots support x8/x8 bifurcation for multi-GPU configurations, and both are reinforced for heavy cards. The M.2 layout provides two PCIe 5.0 slots (with the primary connected directly to the CPU) and three PCIe 4.0 slots, offering excellent storage flexibility.

Features

24+2+2 105A VRM: Overbuilt VRM with 105A Smart Power Stages provides exceptional power delivery for Arrow Lake CPUs with substantial overclocking headroom.

Dual PCIe 5.0 x16: Supports x8/x8 bifurcation for dual GPU configurations, plus two PCIe 5.0 M.2 slots for Gen5 NVMe drives.

Wi-Fi 7 + 5GbE Intel LAN: The Intel BE200 Wi-Fi 7 module supports 320MHz channels and MLO, paired with an Intel I226-V 5GbE controller for reliable wired networking.

MSI Click BIOS 6: MSI’s latest UEFI BIOS offers intuitive overclocking controls, one-click performance presets, and extensive memory tuning options with user-friendly interfaces.

Pros

  • Industry-leading 24+2+2 phase VRM with 105A power stages
  • Excellent DDR5 overclocking support (9200+ MT/s)
  • Dual PCIe 5.0 x16 slots with bifurcation support
  • Tool-less M.2 heatsink installation
  • Wi-Fi 7 and Intel 5GbE LAN
  • Clean, premium aesthetic with excellent build quality

Cons

  • Premium $479 pricing
  • Single chipset limits PCIe lane flexibility compared to X870E
  • BIOS interface, while improved, lags behind ASUS in polish
  • Requires latest BIOS for full Arrow Lake stability
  • RGB ecosystem is less developed than ASUS Aura Sync or Gigabyte RGB Fusion

Verdict

The MSI MEG Z890 ACE is a tour de force in motherboard design for Intel’s Arrow Lake platform. The 24+2+2 VRM is overkill in the best way, the memory overclocking support is class-leading, and the overall feature set is comprehensive. For enthusiasts building a Core Ultra 9 285K system who want the best possible foundation, the Z890 ACE is an outstanding choice that delivers flagship performance and build quality at a competitive price.
