Overview
The ASUS ROG Crosshair X870E Hero represents the pinnacle of AMD AM5 motherboards. Built on the X870E chipset, it features a massive 20+2+2 power stage VRM, full PCIe 5.0 support across the primary x16 slot and three M.2 slots, Wi-Fi 7, 5GbE LAN, and ASUS’s most advanced BIOS and software suite. At $499, it’s a premium investment designed for enthusiasts building no-compromise Ryzen 9000-series systems.
Design & Build
The Crosshair X870E Hero is a striking board with a dark, stealthy aesthetic combining matte black PCB, black heatsinks, and subtle RGB lighting on the chipset heatsink and I/O shroud. The ROG logo on the I/O shroud features addressable RGB with Aura Sync support. Build quality is exceptional—the PCB is a high-density 8-layer design optimized for signal integrity at high memory speeds and PCIe 5.0 signaling.
The VRM heatsinks are substantial, connected by a heat pipe, and the chipset heatsink is actively cooled with a small fan that only spins under load. The backplate is a full metal design that adds rigidity and serves as a thermal dissipation surface for components on the back of the board. The 24-pin and CPU power connectors are reinforced with steel sheathing.
Performance
The VRM is overkill for even the most demanding AM5 processors. The 20+2+2 power stages (20 Vcore, 2 iGPU, 2 SOC) are rated for 110A each, using Infineon TDA21570 FETs. In practice, this means the board can handle the Ryzen 9 9950X at full all-core load without breaking a sweat, and there’s substantial headroom for extreme overclocking with liquid nitrogen.
Memory overclocking is exceptional. The Hero supports DDR5 speeds up to 8000+ MT/s with ASUS’s NitroPath memory trace routing and DIMM Flex technology. In testing, we achieved stable DDR5-7600 CL36 with a Ryzen 7 9800X3D, and DDR5-8000 is achievable with careful tuning using 2-DIMM configurations.
The PCIe layout is flexible: the primary x16 slot operates at PCIe 5.0 full speed, while the second x16 slot shares bandwidth with the primary M.2 slots. Three of the five M.2 slots support PCIe 5.0, providing massive storage bandwidth for Gen5 NVMe drives.
Features
20+2+2 Power Stages: Industry-leading VRM design with 110A Infineon power stages and a robust cooling solution ensures stable power delivery under the most extreme conditions.
PCIe 5.0 Support: Primary GPU slot and three M.2 slots support PCIe 5.0 for maximum bandwidth with current and next-generation components.
Wi-Fi 7 + 5GbE: Latest-generation wireless networking with Wi-Fi 7 (BE200 module) supports 320MHz channels and MLO, while the 5GbE Realtek LAN controller provides ultra-low latency wired connectivity.
ROG BIOS & Software: Comprehensive UEFI BIOS with AI Overclocking, Curve Optimizer support, and extensive memory tuning options. Armoury Crate and AI Suite provide Windows-based system control.
Pros
- Exceptional VRM design handles any AM5 CPU with ease
- Excellent DDR5 overclocking capability (8000+ MT/s)
- Three PCIe 5.0 M.2 slots for maximum storage bandwidth
- Wi-Fi 7 and 5GbE networking
- Comprehensive BIOS and software tuning suite
- Premium build quality with full metal backplate
Cons
- Expensive at $499 MSRP
- Chipset fan can be audible under sustained load
- Second PCIe x16 slot is limited to x8 bandwidth
- ASUS Armoury Crate software is resource-heavy
- RGB lighting is limited compared to some competitors
Verdict
The ASUS ROG Crosshair X870E Hero is a masterpiece of motherboard engineering. Its VRM is best-in-class, its feature set is comprehensive, and its memory overclocking capability sets the standard for AM5. The $499 price is undeniably high, but for enthusiasts building a no-compromise Ryzen system who demand the best possible platform, the Hero delivers on every front. It’s the board to beat in the AM5 flagship category.
