Overview
The Pixel Watch 2, released in October 2023, is Google’s second-generation smartwatch that addresses many shortcomings of the original. It features the Qualcomm Snapdragon W5 Gen 1 chipset for significantly better performance and battery life, multi-path heart rate tracking for improved accuracy, and a continuous electrodermal activity (cEDA) sensor for stress management. It runs Wear OS 4 with deep Google integration at $349.
Design & Build
The Pixel Watch 2 retains the distinctive domed design of the original with a polished aluminum case available in several finishes. The 1.2-inch AMOLED display is bright at 1000 nits and the always-on mode is improved. The 41mm case is compact and comfortable, weighing just 31 grams without the band. The active band features a sport-oriented design with silicone bands and a new clasp mechanism. The crown and side button provide physical navigation alongside the smooth touchscreen. Build quality is excellent, with Gorilla Glass 5 protecting the display and a 5 ATM water resistance rating.
Performance
The Snapdragon W5 Gen 1 chip is a massive upgrade over the original Pixel Watch’s aging Exynos 9110. App loading is significantly faster, animations are smoother, and the watch feels responsive in daily use. Multi-path heart rate tracking uses multiple LEDs and photodiodes for better accuracy during exercise, particularly during running and weightlifting. The cEDA sensor tracks electrodermal activity continuously for stress detection and prompts guided breathing exercises. Battery life reaches a full 24 hours even with the always-on display enabled, making overnight charging practical. Fast charging reaches 50% in about 30 minutes.
Features
Wear OS 4 provides access to the Google Play Store with apps like Google Maps, YouTube Music, WhatsApp, Telegram, and Strava. Google integration is seamless with Google Assistant, Google Wallet, and Google Home controls built in. Safety Detection includes fall detection, emergency SOS, and car crash detection. Fitbit integration provides detailed health tracking including Active Zone Minutes, sleep stages, and Daily Readiness Score. The cEDA sensor provides all-day stress tracking with notifications to prompt mindfulness exercises. Cycle tracking with temperature sensing provides fertility window estimates.
