Amazon Echo Show 15 Review: 7.8/10 - A Smart Home Hub That's Almost There

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ 7.8/10

Overview

The Echo Show 15 is Amazon’s boldest attempt yet at turning a smart display into the de facto command center for your smart home. At $249, it’s a wall-mountable 15.6-inch dashboard that replaces sticky notes, family calendars, and smart home control panels - but its execution has a few rough edges that keep it from being indispensable.

Design & Build

The Show 15 is strikingly different from the wedge-shaped Echo Shows of the past. It’s essentially a digital picture frame: a 15.6-inch 1080p LCD in a slim white or black chassis that can sit on a countertop stand or mount flush to a wall using the included VESA-compatible bracket. The bezels are thicker than a modern tablet’s, but that’s forgivable given the intended stationary use. The fire-and-forget wall mount is thoughtful - it covers your outlet and hides cables cleanly. The 13 MP camera sits on the right bezel and physically slides to cover when idle, addressing privacy concerns head-on.

Performance

The custom AZ2 Neural Edge processor handles Alexa responses and visual widgets with no lag. Scrolling through the widget-filled home screen is smooth, and the 1080p resolution is adequate - not Retina-sharp, but good enough for glanceable info at arm’s length. The camera auto-frames well for video calls, keeping you centered without the fisheye distortion of the Echo Show 8. Audio is surprisingly good for such a thin chassis: the dual tweeters and passive radiator produce clear, room-filling sound that handles podcasts and music comfortably, though bass lacks punch at higher volumes.

Features

The biggest selling point - the widget-based home screen - is a mixed bag. Widgets for calendars, sticky notes, shopping lists, and smart home controls are genuinely useful in a family kitchen context. However, Amazon’s app ecosystem is limited compared to what you’d get with a cheap Fire tablet wall-mounted next to a smart hub. The built-in Zigbee and Matter radios eliminate the need for a separate hub for most smart devices, which is excellent. But the lack of a proper web browser and the heavy Amazon content promotion in the UI (ads for Prime Video, Amazon Music) detract from the appliance-like experience.

Pros

  • Wall-mountable design with cable management
  • Built-in Zigbee and Matter smart home hub
  • Auto-framing 13 MP camera for video calls
  • Widget-based family dashboard concept

Cons

  • UI pushes Amazon content too aggressively
  • Limited app selection compared to a tablet
  • 1080p display feels dated at this price
  • No proper web browser

Verdict

The Echo Show 15 is a compelling smart home dashboard for families already deep in Amazon’s ecosystem. If you want a glanceable command center for your Zigbee lights, Ring doorbell, and Alexa routines, it delivers. But if you’re ecosystem-agnostic, a wall-mounted tablet with Home Assistant gives you more flexibility for the same money.
