Apple Studio Display 2 Review: 8.5/10 - Stunning Panel, Frustrating Value

The Apple Studio Display 2 is exactly what the original should have been - ProMotion, a better webcam, and slightly higher brightness. At $1,599, it’s still expensive for a 27-inch 5K monitor, and you can get comparable specs for half the price if you don’t need macOS-native integration. But if you’re deep in the Apple ecosystem, the seamless experience is hard to ignore.
Design & Build
The design is unchanged from the original - aluminum unibody, slim bezels, and that distinctive silver or space gray finish. The stand is still sold separately ($199 for the tilt-only version, $399 for height-adjustable), which remains a bitter pill to swallow. The build quality is phenomenal: zero flex, perfect alignment, and the speakers built into the chin actually sound decent - they’re not MacBook Pro-tier, but they’re better than any other monitor’s built-in audio.
Performance
The 5K panel at 5120x2880 is incredibly sharp - text rendering is flawless, and the extra real estate over 4K is noticeable when editing photos or working in large spreadsheets. The jump from 60Hz to 120Hz ProMotion is transformative for everyday use. Scrolling through long documents and websites feels buttery smooth, and it makes the original Studio Display feel laggy by comparison. HDR content looks excellent with the 1,000-nit peak brightness, though it’s not true Dolby Vision - it’s an IPS panel with solid backlight control, not mini-LED.
