Acer Swift 3 Review: 7.8/10 - Budget Ultrabook Champion
Overview
The Acer Swift 3 (SF314-512) is the budget ultrabook that refuses to cut the wrong corners. Starting at just $699, it delivers a solid aluminum body, Intel 12th/13th Gen P-series processors, a Thunderbolt 4 port, and an impressively light 2.76-pound chassis. For students, remote workers, and budget-conscious buyers, it’s one of the best values in the laptops category.
Design & Build
The Swift 3 features an all-aluminum chassis in a choice of Silver or Steel Gray. At 2.76 pounds (1.25 kg) and 0.63 inches thick, it’s nearly as portable as premium ultrabooks costing twice as much. Build quality is solid for the price - there’s some lid flex and the base flexes slightly under heavy palm pressure, but it feels significantly more premium than plastic alternatives like the Lenovo IdeaPad or HP Pavilion series. The 180-degree flat hinge is a nice touch for sharing screens.
Performance
Intel’s 12th Gen Core i5-1240P (12 cores, 16 threads, up to 4.4 GHz) or i7-1260P (14 cores, 20 threads, up to 4.7 GHz) provide strong multi-threaded performance, scoring ~8,500 in PCMark 10 and ~9,500 in Geekbench 6 multi-core. The Iris Xe graphics handle 4K streaming and light photo editing smoothly. The 28W P-series chips do generate heat - the fan is audible under sustained load, and the bottom gets warm during extended use.
Display
The 14-inch 1920x1080 IPS display is good but not great. It covers about 63% sRGB and offers 300 nits of brightness - adequate for indoor use but struggles in bright sunlight. Color accuracy is acceptable for general productivity but not suitable for color-critical photo or video work. The anti-glare coating helps reduce reflections. An upgrade to a higher-quality display would be our top wish for the next generation.
Battery Life
The 56Wh battery delivers 8-10 hours of mixed productivity use with the FHD display. The P-series processor draws more power than U-series alternatives, so heavy workloads will drain faster. The 65W USB-C charger provides reasonable charge speeds. For a $699 laptop, battery life is competitive if not class-leading.
Keyboard & Trackpad
The keyboard features 1.4mm key travel with a slightly shallow but acceptable typing feel. The keys are well-spaced, and backlighting is standard on most configurations. The large precision trackpad is smooth and responsive, supporting all Windows gestures without issue. No complaints at this price point.
Ports & Connectivity
Surprisingly generous for a budget ultrabook: 1x Thunderbolt 4 (USB-C), 1x USB-C 3.2 Gen 2, 2x USB-A 3.2 Gen 2, HDMI 2.1, and a 3.5mm audio jack. Having both Thunderbolt 4 and two USB-A ports at this price is exceptional. Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.2 are standard.
Pros
- Excellent value at $699 starting price
- Aluminum chassis looks and feels premium
- Thunderbolt 4 port + HDMI 2.1 + 2x USB-A
- Lightweight at 2.76 lbs
- Solid productivity performance
Cons
- Mediocre display with limited color gamut and brightness
- Fans audible under sustained load
- RAM is soldered, not upgradable
- Single SSD slot, limited to one drive
- Build quality has some flex compared to premium rivals
Verdict
The Acer Swift 3 is a phenomenal value proposition. You get an aluminum chassis, Thunderbolt 4, a lightweight design, and strong Intel P-series performance for just $699. The display is the biggest compromise - it’s perfectly usable for school, office work, and web browsing, but creative users will want to upgrade to something with better color accuracy. For anyone on a tight budget who doesn’t want to feel like they’re using a budget laptop, the Swift 3 delivers.
