Overview
The Sony WF-1000XM5 are Sony’s most advanced true wireless earbuds, packing the new Integrated Processor V2, 8.4mm drivers, and a dramatically smaller design than their predecessors. They deliver class-leading noise cancellation in a tiny form factor, along with LDAC high-resolution audio support, Qi wireless charging, and IPX4 water resistance. At $278, they undercut the AirPods Pro 2 while offering superior audio codec support and comparable ANC performance.
Design & Build
Sony has shrunk the WF-1000XM5 by approximately 25% compared to the XM4, making them significantly more comfortable for smaller ears. The charging case is also 15% smaller, fitting easily into a coin pocket. The textured matte finish on the earbuds resists fingerprints and provides grip when inserting them. The earbuds are available in Black and Champagne Silver, both with a sophisticated, understated look. IPX4 water resistance protects against sweat and light rain. The new noise isolation earbud tips (in SS/S/M/L/LL sizes) improve passive sealing and comfort.
Performance
Noise cancellation on the WF-1000XM5 is exceptional - among the best in the true wireless category, rivaling the AirPods Pro 2 and Bose QuietComfort Ultra Earbuds. The Integrated Processor V2 drives six microphones (three per earbud) plus a bone conduction sensor for voice pickup. Sound quality is superb, with the 8.4mm driver delivering deep, punchy bass, detailed mids, and extended treble. LDAC support at up to 990 kbps provides near-lossless wireless audio for Android users. The DSEE Extreme upscaling engine restores detail to compressed audio files using AI.
Features
|Battery life is excellent at 8 hours with ANC on and 24 hours total with the charging case (which supports both Qi wireless and USB-C charging). The 3-minute quick charge provides 1 hour of playback. Adaptive Sound Control automatically adjusts ANC and ambient sound based on your activity and location. Speak-to-Chat pauses music when you start a conversation. Multipoint Bluetooth connects two devices simultaneously. The Sony Headphones Connect app offers a customizable equalizer and sound personalization. The new ear-tip material reduces sliding, improving fit stability during movement.
