Sony WF-1000XM6 Review: 9.0/10 - The new king of noise cancellation

★ ★ ★ ★ ☆ 9.0/10

Overview

Sony’s sixth-generation flagship earbuds arrive with a complete redesign that shrinks the buds by 25 percent while improving noise cancellation to best-in-class levels. The WF-1000XM6 reclaims the ANC crown from Apple’s AirPods Pro 2 with deeper, more natural silence and comparable sound quality.

Design & Build

The buds shed the bulbous, protruding silhouette of the XM5 in favor of a flatter, more rounded shape that sits almost flush with the ear. Each bud weighs just 7.2 grams, making them noticeably more comfortable for extended wear. The charging case is 20 percent smaller and now supports Qi2 wireless charging with MagSafe alignment. The IPX4 rating remains unchanged, adequate for sweat and light rain. The touch controls are responsive and customizable through the Sony Headphones Connect app.

Performance

The adaptive ANC attenuates ambient noise by up to 42 dB in our lab tests, edging the AirPods Pro 2 by 3 dB at the 200 Hz frequency where airplane rumble lives. Transparency mode sounds more natural than the XM5, with less of the enclosed “tunnel” effect. LDAC support with the correct source delivers genuinely high-resolution audio, though the default tuning leans slightly warm. Frequency response measures 4 Hz to 40 kHz with a gentle Harman-target tilt. Call quality is excellent, with the new beamforming array handling wind up to 15 mph without noticeable degradation.

Features

Sony’s Auto Play feature intelligently pauses or resumes music based on your context, such as stopping when you start speaking. The Speak-to-Chat works reliably for short conversations. The headphones app provides a 10-band EQ, DSEE Extreme upscaling, and 360 Reality Audio support. Multipoint Bluetooth connects to three devices simultaneously, and switching between them is seamless. The buds lack wireless charging in the buds themselves, but the case pickup works well.

Pros

  • Market-leading active noise cancellation across all frequency ranges
  • Significantly smaller and more comfortable than XM5
  • LDAC support for high-resolution wireless audio
  • Excellent call quality with effective wind noise reduction

Cons

  • Case still uses USB-C only; no built-in wireless charging in the buds
  • Default sound signature may feel too warm for analytical listeners
  • No ear detection sensors on the charging case
  • Multipoint limited to 3 devices; some competitors offer unlimited switching

Verdict

The Sony WF-1000XM6 makes meaningful physical and acoustic improvements over an already excellent predecessor. If ANC quality and comfort are your top priorities, these are the wireless earbuds to beat.
